The Capital Beltway was originally constructed between 1960 and 1964. Subsequent construction has added mainline and auxiliary lanes. Much of the Beltway pavement and most bridges date from the original construction and therefore are approaching the end of their designed lifespan. SHA is currently performing an evaluation to determine what pavement and bridges will need to be replaced within the next 20 to 30 years.

Due to the age and condition of the existing Beltway pavement, it is likely that most of the pavement will have to be completely replaced. This process will be divided into many phases and require many years to complete. The pavement replacement will also require extensive maintenance of traffic during construction.

Many bridges around the Beltway are approaching the end of their designed life spans and carrying daily traffic volumes that are higher than those anticipated when the bridges were originally designed. As a result, many bridges will also need to be either completely replaced or rehabilitated.

The required rehabilitation that will be identified as part of the current evaluation could be implemented as part of the overall Capital Beltway Study or independent of the study.
